How to write a CV for the Hungarian citizenship application?
When you apply for Hungarian citizenship, you will be required to write a CV. This is in fact more like a motivation letter: its purpose is to convince the administrator working on your case that you are not only eligible for Hungarian citizenship, but also a valuable member of society whose presence will be beneficial to Hungary.
When you apply for Hungarian citizenship, you will be required to write a CV. This is in fact more like a motivation letter: its purpose is to convince the administrator working on your case that you are not only eligible for Hungarian citizenship, but also a valuable member of society whose presence will be beneficial to Hungary.
Your CV as part of the citizenship application
When you apply for Hungarian citizenship, you will be required to fill out various forms to provide information about your Hungarian ancestry and attachment. One of the forms will include an “essay question”, where you have to write a few sentences in Hungarian about who you are, why you want to become a Hungarian citizen, and what your plans are in Hungary.
While this section is often referred to as a CV, you may also think about it as an autobiography combined with a motivation letter. This is where you can convince administrators that you will be a valuable member of Hungarian society through telling them more about yourself, your contributions, your attachment to Hungary, and the place of Hungary in your life.
Things you should include when you write a CV:
- Your name
- Your education – Mention not only your schools and qualifications, but also if you had any formal or informal education in Hungarian or concerning Hungarian culture
- Your job – Say what you do for a living now, but you can mention any additional expertise as well
- Your family – Consider not only your nuclear family, but also your wider family, especially if you are in contact with any Hungarian relatives
At the same time, try not to put emphasis on how you want to use your Hungarian citizenship for visa-free access to most countries around the world. While obtaining a Hungarian passport might be a factor of why you decided to pursue Hungarian citizenship, your focus should be on strengthening connections and building a better future in Hungary.
Formal requirements of your Hungarian citizenship CV
Since your CV will be part of the citizenship application forms, you will be expected to write roughly one A4 page of text, which is around 350-600 words depending on the size of your handwriting. The CV will need to be
- Handwritten
- In blue ink pen
- Legible (you are allowed to write in cursive, just make sure the administrator will able to read it)
- In Hungarian
You are allowed to write your CV at home, when you are filling out the rest of the citizenship application forms. If you are attending a language course, you can ask your teacher or tutor to review what you wrote to make sure there are no mistakes that would hinder understanding (a few mistakes here and there are acceptable as long as the text is legible and coherent). If you work with Helpers on your application package, your account manager will also review your CV just like every other section of the application form.
Nevertheless, when you are submitting your application package, the administrator might ask you to rewrite it on the spot. This might not happen, but make sure to prepare for the possibility anyway. You do not need to learn your CV by heart, but you should have a rough idea of what you want to include.
