Can Americans retire in Hungary?

For many Americans, retirement in Europe sounds like the ultimate plan: slower mornings, walkable cities, weekend trips across the continent, and a completely different pace of life. And Hungary, with Budapest at its center and quieter towns and countryside within reach of the capital, can easily make that shortlist. But can you actually retire in Hungary? Yes – but there’s a catch.

Why consider Hungary for retirement?

Hungary offers something that many people are looking for when planning their retirement: a European lifestyle without necessarily choosing one of Western Europe’s more expensive destinations. Budapest combines the advantages of major European capitals full of cultural events, restaurants, thermal baths, all complemented by a robust network of public transportation and easy access to the rest of Europe. At the same time, those looking for a quieter retirement can consider smaller Hungarian cities, towns, or countryside locations.

Currently more than 1.4 million people living in the U.S. consider themselves Hungarian. For Americans who already have a personal connection to Hungary through their family, retirement here can have an additional aspect. Moving to Hungary may mean returning to the country their parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents once called home.

Moving to Hungary

Hungary does not currently offer a dedicated retirement visa for US citizens. While Americans can visit Hungary visa-free for short stays, moving here permanently requires a legal basis for long-term residence.

However, for some Americans, there may be a much simpler solution – and it might be hidden in their family history. If you have Hungarian parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, or even more distant Hungarian ancestors, you may be eligible for Hungarian citizenship. In some cases, you may even already be a Hungarian citizen without realizing it.

Having a connection to Hungary changes the question from “How can I get a residence permit to retire in Hungary?” to “How can I prove or reclaim my Hungarian citizenship?”

You might be a Hungarian citizen already

If you have Hungarian ancestry, it is worth investigating your citizenship status. Hungarian citizenship is primarily based on descent rather than place of birth. This means that being born in the United States does not necessarily prevent someone from being a Hungarian citizen.

Depending on your family history and the citizenship status of your ancestors, you may fall into one of two broad categories:

  1. You are already a Hungarian citizen, you just need to verify it.
If Hungarian citizenship was passed down through the generations without the citizenship line being broken, you might already be a Hungarian citizen. In this case, you will not be applying for citizenship but for the verification of your existing Hungarian citizenship.

  2. You are eligible for simplified naturalization.
If the citizenship line was broken somewhere in your family history, having a Hungarian ancestor may still provide a path to citizenship. You can become a Hungarian citizen if you apply for it through simplified naturalization. This route has different requirements, including sufficient Hungarian language skills.

This distinction is especially important for families who left Hungary generations ago. Historical citizenship laws, marriages, naturalizations, changes of borders, and other circumstances can all influence whether citizenship was transmitted to the next generation. Simply having a Hungarian-born ancestor therefore does not automatically tell you which procedure applies.

Hungarian citizenship makes retirement easier

For someone planning to spend their retirement in Hungary, citizenship can fundamentally simplify the process.

  • Instead of maintaining a Hungarian residence permit based on a specific immigration purpose, a Hungarian citizen has the right to live in Hungary without a time limit.
  • Hungarian citizenship also means EU citizenship, providing significantly greater freedom to live and travel within the European Union under the applicable EU rules.
  • Moreover, becoming Hungarian does not necessarily mean giving up your American citizenship. Both Hungary and the United States permit dual citizenship.

For an American with Hungarian roots, exploring citizenship can therefore be much more than reconnecting with family history. It can become part of a practical long-term plan for life in Europe.

Finding a home in Hungary

Once the legal side of your move is clear, the next question is a much more exciting one: where are you going to live? Some retirees are drawn to Budapest and want to remain close to the cultural life and conveniences of the capital. Others prefer a smaller city, a home near Lake Balaton, or a quieter property outside the busiest urban areas.

Buying property in another country, however, involves more than finding the right apartment or house. The process, legal requirements, administration, and practical considerations may be unfamiliar, especially if you are arranging the purchase from abroad. Our team at Helpers, however, can help with Hungarian real estate purchase as well as citizenship processes, making it possible to coordinate the practical side of establishing your new home alongside your immigration or citizenship plans.

Plan your retirement well in advance

If you have Hungary in your sights while planning for your retirement, it is worth investigating whether Hungarian citizenship might be on the table for you. Keep in mind that citizenship procedures take time, and cases involving older family records may require additional research, document retrieval, translations, or clarification of events that happened decades ago.

Starting early gives you time to understand your citizenship status, collect the necessary documentation, complete the relevant procedure and then plan the practical details of your move – including finding a home in Hungary.

You do not have to wait until your retirement date to start the preparations. In any case, your retirement in Hungary might be closer than you think – and the best place to start may be your own family tree.

How does Hungarian citizenship make retirement easier?

Hungarian citizenship allows you to stay in Hungary without a time limit, and enter any of the Schengen member states for at least 90 days without a separate visa. You will be allowed to move to any EU country too with just a simple registration if you prefer that. Additionally, you will be allowed to keep all your U.S. American privileges too, since both Hungary and the U.S.A. allow dual citizenship.
