Types of citizenship procedures
Hungary has one of the most permissive laws for acquiring European citizenship. The procedure is simple and straightforward, but it varies depending on the basis of your application.
When applying for Hungarian Citizenship:
- The first step is to determine the basis of your application.
- If you live in Hungary long-term, after some time you become eligible to the procedure called naturalization.
- The waiting time may be shortened if you are married to a Hungarian citizen and if you have children.
- If you have Hungarian ancestors, you can try for simplified naturalization or verification, which both offer various benefits.
When applying for Hungarian Citizenship based on your ancestry:
- You will be required to prove that your parents or further ancestors were Hungarian citizens. This means presenting documents like birth or marriage certificates, passports, or other documents that can verify their Hungarian identity.
- If you are sure about your origin but cannot prove it, don’t worry: we offer ancestry research among our services.
- Application is possible both in Hungary or at a Hungarian consulate. You can simply book an appointment and meet the consul for an interview.
- You may need to learn basic Hungarian, since you need to book your appointment in Hungarian, and talk to the consul in Hungarian for a few minutes. We offer targeted preparation as well as practice interviews.
- In specific cases, you will be eligible for citizenship verification. The most important benefit of this procedure is that you do not have to learn Hungarian. However, it is only available if you meet special conditions. If you opt for a consultation, our expert will let you know if this is available to you.
