Hungarian citizenship in 2021

Even during the current pandemic and the many uncertainties around us, getting Hungarian citizenship based on your ancestry continues to be a straightforward process, and an easy way to gaining EU citizenship.

Even during the current pandemic and the many uncertainties around us, getting Hungarian citizenship based on your ancestry continues to be a straightforward process, and an easy way to gaining EU citizenship.

Why to apply for Hungarian citizenship?

Hungary is a member of the European Union with no intention for leaving (the latest public opinion polls also say that support for EU membership is stronger than ever), and Hungarian citizens can live, work, and study anywhere in the European Union. As EU citizens, they are also allowed to travel without a visa to any countries of the Schengen zone, and several other countries. The Hungarian passport is the 10th strongest in the world, with visa-free access to 182 countries.

Hungary allows dual citizenship, which means you can enjoy the privileges of EU citizenship while not forfeiting the rights that come with your original citizenship.

The Hungarian naturalization procedure is quite straightforward and quick compared to other EU countries. If your ancestors were Hungarian citizens, you will be eligible for citizenship for sure – you just have to verify your eligibility with the right documents.

Get Hungarian citizenship through ancestry

If your parents, grandparents, or other ancestors were Hungarian citizens, you are eligible for Hungarian citizenship. You will need to submit as proof the documents verifying your ancestors’ connection to Hungary (e.g. birth, baptism, or marriage certificates of your ancestors) and your own connection to your ancestors (e.g. all the birth certificates that confirm the lineage between you and your Hungarian ancestor).

You also need to speak some Hungarian: more precisely, you need to speak Hungarian at a conversational level. You will be required to present your case to the consul or administrator in Hungarian, in your own words – why you want to become a Hungarian citizen, and what is your connection to Hungary.

While the current pandemic affects every area of our lives, you can still start the application procedure. Most consulates are still open (depends on your country of residence), and they are still processing applications. If you are in Hungary, local government offices are also open, you just need an appointment for your case.
